The Nigerian Ministry of Youth and Sports Development have announced a decision to suspend all sporting events including football, qualification matches for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games, MySportDab reports.
The Sports Ministry confirmed the suspension of all national and international sporting activities today 19th March 2020 signed by Director (FEAD) Tayo Oreweme.
A statement read: “As a precautionary move against the COVID-1 spread which is now a global epidemic, Nigeria’s President Muhamadu Buhari has approved the suspension of all Sporting Events and the closure of all NYSC orientation camps in Nigeria to avoid the spread of the deadly virus.
“In a combined effort to assure safe health and well-being of all sports loving Nigerians at large, I am directed to inform you that all national sports federations must suspend the activities and/or participation in all local and international competitions including qualification matches for tournaments such as the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic games.
“Any federation that fails to abide must seek immediate approval from the office of the Honourable Minister. You are now advised to adhere strictly with these directives until when the Coronavirus outbreak is in control.”
