Manchester United Legend Paul Scholes believes that his former club are still without a ‘top-class’ striker, MySportDab reports.
Scholes claims that Anthony Martial deceived fans into believing he was a quality No 9 last season.
Coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tried to improve his attacking options in the wings this summer but the club failed to sign the player he wanted in Jadon Sancho.
Last January, The Red Devils also failed to sign striker Erling Haaland, who joined Borussia Dortmund instead.
Now, United have signed a 33-year-old free agent Edinson Cavani but Paul Scholes insists the club still needs a world class forward.
United’s first-choice front three right now are Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, and Martial as the main striker.
However, Paul Scholes praised the trio, but believes they are not out-and-out No 9s.
‘They are exceptionally talented lads. We know that already,’ Scholes told Stadium Astro.
‘The main problem at United is that none of them are a centre-forward.
‘Martial deceived us into thinking he was a quality striker at the end of last season because he scored goals and was looked good.
‘He’s started this season very poor, which shows you that he isn’t. It’s frustrating. Which is why I’ve always said that we need a top-class No 9 upfront.’
Anthony Martial scored 23 goals across 48 games last season and ended the 2019-20 season with three goals in his last six league matches.
So far this season in three matches, he is yet to score for Manchester United.
Rashford scored 22 goals in 44 matches last season and has scored two so far in the current 2020-21 season.
Meanwhile, Mason Greenwood did score 19 goals in 51 matches in all competitions.
United’s new summer signing Cavani scored 200 goals in 301 matches for Paris Saint-Germain before leaving the club.
