Lionel Messi and thousands of footballers across the world have paid tribute to football icon Diego Maradona after his death on Wednesday, MySportDab reports.
Maradona underwent a successful brain surgery this month but was also undergoing treatment due to his alcohol dependency.
But on Wednesday, news went viral in Argentina that nine ambulances were sent to his house in Buenos Aires.
One of the nurses who took care of him raised the alarm after she discovered Maradona had suffered a heart attack before he was confirmed dead at the scene.
Maradona’s death has led to tributes across the footballing world.
Football Legends like Cristiano Ronaldo, Pele, Gary Lineker and Paul Gascoigne have all paid tribute to the legendary Argentine figure.
And Messi, has now delivered his own tribute to the football legend.
“A sad day for all Argentines and for the football world,” he wrote on Instagram.
“He has left us but he still exists, because Diego is eternal.
“I have so many beautiful moments with him and I wanted to send my condolences to all his family members and friends. RIP”
Lionel Messi was born a year after Maradona’s world class performance at the 1986 World Cup.
He grew up watching Maradona’s rise to global sensation at Napoli, as the legendary figure set new records in Italy.
The pair had a close bond as Messi’s football career began to take shape in 2005.
They linked up with the Argentina national team in 2008 when Maradona was confirmed as head coach.
But, Argentina crashed out of the World Cup in the Quarter-final, to Germany.
