Raphael Varane: Manchester United Suffers Another Injury Blow Ahead Of Manchester Derby

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has gotten injured again during the Champions League match between Atalanta on Tuesday, MySportDab reports.

The Frenchman went down in the 38th minute and was attended to by medical personnels on the pitch.

He initially claimed he could play on, but later asked to be substituted.

Mason Greenwood replaced him while United were down 1-0 to Atalanta before Cristiano Ronaldo put them level with a minute to go in the first half.

Speaking after the match, Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claimed the injury “didn’t look good”.

He said: “He asked to come off because he didn’t want to risk anything. We have had the first assessment but it doesn’t look good. Fingers crossed, we will assess him again tommorow.”

Varane returned in the last match after recovering from a quad injury and this news will come as a substantial blow for Manchester United who play Manchester City on Sunday.

Varane, who moved to Old Trafford for £40million this summer has made just nine appearances for United.

The return of Varane was important for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Victor Lindelof has been ruled out after picking up a knock in training.

Solskjaer will be worried on who to start in Saturday’s home clash with Manchester City.

If he is to stick to a 5-3-2 formation which he played against Spurs and Atalanta, we may see a trio of Maguire, Bailly and Shaw as three centre backs, except Lindelof is fit before then.

He could switch back to a 4-3-3 formation so as to pair Maguire and Bailly.
