Real Madrid needed a win to continue their pursuit of Barcelona in the title race.
Barcelona earlier defeated Getafe by a lone goal to try and break off from Real Madrid’s chase in the La Liga title race.
Los Blancos pressed Atletico Bilbao for an early goal and were effectively in control of the game despite playing away from home.
Atletico Bilbao did not offer much resistance to the Los Blancos going forward.
They were less threatening than the visitors when making advances on the attack and fell back into their defense in the early minutes of the game to contain the pressure from Real Madrid
It was not long before Real Madrid took a deserved 1-0 lead courtesy of a goal from Karim Benzema after an assist by Marcus Asensio
Despite taking the lead, Real Madrid continue to hold sway over the game and were aiming for a second goal going forward.
Atletico Bilbao offered no reasonable response and ended up trailing the visitors by a lone goal after the first-half break.
Second Half Report
Nothing changed in the second half of the game as Real Madrid continue to dominate proceedings going forward.
Atletico Bilbao gave a better performance using counterattacks to threaten Real Madrid’s defense and looking for an equaliser.
The scoreline remain 1-0 with Real Madrid still taking the lead, but Atletico Bilbao were more deadly when attacking and were able to hold off Los Blancos while searching for an equaliser.
Despite efforts by Atletico Bilbao, Toni Kroos scored a late goal to sink the host and sealed the win with a 2-0 win before the final whistle.
