The Chelsea loanee to Inter Milan was targeted by Juventus fans with racial abuse when he converted a stoppage-time spot-kick to equalize for Inter in a heated Coppa Italia clash in Turin.
Juventus nearly ran out as 1-0 winners before Romelu Lukaku salvage a draw for the away side at the dearth.
After netting the equaliser, Romelu Lukaku used a shushed celebration in front of Juventus fans who them aimed racial slurs at him chanting “f***king monkey, f**k off!”
After the incident, Romelu Lukaku took to his Instagram handle to bemoan incidents of racial abuse that has not been dealt with by Italian football authorities and has repeated itself.
Romelu Lukaku cited an instance he was abused in a game by Cagliari by Cagliari fans in 2019.
He wrote,
“History repeats itself again. I’ve been through it 2019, and 2023 again.
“I hope the league really take action for real this time because this beautiful game must be enjoyed by everyone.”
Leading the list of players who immediately responded to Romelu Lukaku’s post was PSG forward Kylian Mbappe.
Chelsea star Chalobah and Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr, including Achraf Hakimi, Thibaut Courtois, and Inter Milan’s Andre Onana also reacted to the post.
They all dropped love, fist, and prayer emojis in solidarity and support of Romelu Lukaku.
Vinicius Jr recently came under attack this season when Atletico Madrid players yelled “Vincius Jr, you are monkey” before the Madrid Derby at the Metropolitano stadium.
Real Madrid, Laliga, and several players condemn the racial chants on Vinicius Jr.
In Romelu Lukaku’s case, all fingers are crossed as to what will be the next step taken by Italian authorities after the 2019 incident went unpunished.
