On Wednesday, Onana was seen with his agents arriving in Manchester before heading to United’s training ground.
The 27-year-old will now complete tests at the club’s training base ahead of completion of the transfer.
United have been trying to sign a new No 1 since De Gea’s 12-year career at Old Trafford ended last week.
The Spaniard left at the end of June, after Ten Hag wanted a goalkeeper that was very good wihh his legs.
Now, ten Hag and Onana will be reunited after previously working together during the player’s rise from Ajax’s youth team to the starting XI.
The 27-year-old performed well in Italy last season as inter Milan won the Coppa Italia, Supercoppa Italiana, and reached the Champions League final.
Ten Hag will hope that Onana’s visa process won’t delay him from joining the squad on their upcoming US tour.
