Super Eagles Prepare for AFCON Qualifiers Against Sao Tome and Principe

In readiness for the upcoming AFCON qualifiers against Sao Tome and Principe, the Super Eagles are poised to convene at Uyo on Monday, September 4, MySportDab reports.

The concluding group match for Nigeria in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign is scheduled to take place on Sunday, September 10, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

While the match may hold limited consequence given Nigeria and Guinea Bissau’s secured qualification from the group, the Super Eagles are keen on concluding the qualifying series on a high note by securing victory and clinching the top spot in the group.

In a resounding testament to their prowess, the Super Eagles previously secured an emphatic 10-0 win over Sao Tome and Principe during the first leg of the qualifiers on matchday two.

Sao Tome and Principe currently languish at the bottom of the group, sharing the position with Sierra Leone. Nigeria’s qualification to AFCON was solidified with a 3-2 victory against Sierra Leone on matchday five.

Amidst the uncertainty surrounding the coaching crew of the Super Eagles due to Jose Peseiro’s contract expiration, the lineup of players for the forthcoming game remains undisclosed.

Speculations hint at the Nigeria Football Federation’s intention to appoint an interim coach for the encounter with Sao Tome and Principe.

Notable figures like Technical Director Austin Eguavoen and current assistants Salisu Yusuf and Finidi George are touted as potential candidates for the interim coaching role.

This occasion will mark the Super Eagles’ return to the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, a homecoming after several years. The facility notably hosted all of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification matches.

As the Super Eagles convene in Uyo and gear up for the showdown against Sao Tome and Principe, their preparations and performance in this fixture are pivotal to their AFCON campaign.

The team aspires to recapture the continental title, a feat last achieved in 2013.
