Super Falcons defender, Ashleigh Plumptre, has indicated her intention to move abroad and join a new club following her departure from Women’s Super League (WSL) side Leicester City at the end of the previous season, MySportDab reports.

The 25-year-old recently made her debut at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, representing Nigeria in the tournament held in Australia and New Zealand.

Plumptre played in all four of Nigeria’s matches, contributing to three clean sheets as the team advanced to the round of 16, eventually bowing out to England in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw.

With domestic leagues resuming after the international break, the Nigerian defender is now focused on her club career. As a free agent after leaving Leicester City, Plumptre is set to join a new team outside of England.

Her decision to seek opportunities abroad echoes her previous choice to represent Nigeria on the international stage. While she initially had reservations about joining the new club, a conversation with the coach changed her perspective.

Plumptre, however, has not disclosed the identity of her new team as it has not been officially announced yet. In an interview with Eagles Tracker, she explained her motivations: that she wasn’t interested in the team initially and When her dad brought it up to her, she was like, No, I don’t have interest in going genuinely. And then she had a call with the coach, and they spoke about the things I just said.

The defender emphasized that her decision is not solely based on football but also on the broader impact she wants to make in the sport and the connections she aims to establish.

Plumptre expressed her excitement about the new challenge despite the challenges of being away from family.

Plumptre has prior experience playing abroad, having represented the USA Trojans and LA Galaxy OC in the United States before returning to England to play for her hometown club, Leicester City.

During her three-year stint at Leicester, she scored four goals in 79 appearances across all competitions.

The versatile defender’s impending move abroad adds a new chapter to her football journey, and she looks forward to embracing the opportunity, meeting new teammates, and continuing her football career on foreign soil.

As Plumptre embarks on this new adventure, her contributions to the Super Falcons and her club career will be closely watched by fans and supporters alike.
