Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has made a shock U-turn on his Cameroon AFCON decision, MySportDab reports.
Onana agreed to delay his linkup with Cameroon national team for AFCON to see United through two crucial domestic fixtures.
He has played his first game against Wigan Athletic since the delay and will play the next match against Tottenham Hotspur in January 14
Andre Onana was expected to join the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon immediately after the Tottenham match.
According to reports, the £47m signing from Inter Milan was expected to board a 7-hour flight from London to Ivory Coast, and join Cameroon for their AFCON opener against Guinea on Monday, January 15.
Now, according to a report by inews, Andre Onana is set to miss Cameroon’s AFCON opener due to a change of his travel plans
It was thought he will be available to start on goal for the team against Guinea but his travel plans that would have allowed him linkup for the match has been scuppered.
However, it has been confirmed he will not extend his stay with Manchester United for another match after the Tottenham match.
Onana risked losing his first team role to his £4.3m backup signing from Fenerbahce Altay Bayindir hence his decision to stay put with the Red Devils by delaying his AFCON linkup with Cameroon.
Onana’s AFCON delay was possible because Cameroon Football Federation, listened to pleas from Manchester United to have the player continue with a few match for the club before turning up for the tournament.
United claimed it was part of the club’s agreement with Andre Onana and Inter Milan that the 2023 Champions League finalist will be available for the club throughout his first season.
It is yet to be determined when Onana will linkup with Cameroon squad for 2023 AFCON but it has been confirmed he will not travel immediately after Tottenham match and will not also be available for United’s next fixture after the match.
