European giants Bayern Munich and Liverpool are now locked in a race to sign high-flying Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso, MySportDab reports.
Bayern Munich called an end to their collaboration with their manager Thomas Tuchel today with the German expected to leave the club at the end of the season.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp announced in January 2024 he will step down as the club’s manager at the end of the season.
With the two managerial openings at both clubs, Xabi Alonso has emerged as a top candidate to replace either of of the two soon-to-leave managers.
Before Bayern Munich decided to part ways with Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season, the club were already linked with a move for Xabi Alonso.
French outlet Foot Mercato claims Bayern Munich were ‘attracted’ to Alonso as a top target to replace Tuchel should they decide to sack the German tactician.
And now that the club have taken a decision to end their deal with Tuchel, their interest in Xabi Alonso will definitely intensify.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have been on the trail of Xabi Alonso with reports contact have been made with the Spaniard following Jurgen Klopp’s decision to leave.
The Reds reportedly consider the Spaniard as a the best hand to take over from Klopp due to his standout campaign with Bayer Leverkusen.
As things stand, the two clubs – Bayern and Liverpool – are set to be locked in a race to sign Xabi Alonso with Liverpool tipped as favorites to win the race.
As per Fabrizio Romano, who confirms the interest of the two clubs on the Spaniard, Alonso has no release clause with Bayer Leverkusen but he has contract with the club till 2026.
Sources close to the highly-sought manager say he is open to an offer from clubs he ‘frequented as a player.’
Alonso was part of the legendary Liverpool squad that won the Champions League in 2005. He played for the club from 2004 to 2009.
He also played for Bayern Munich from 2014 to 2017, winning four Bundesliga titles before calling time on his career.
