The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced Finidi George as the interim coach for the Super Eagles’ upcoming friendly against Ghana’s Black Stars in Marrakech, Morocco, on Friday, MySportDab Reports.

George, a former Ajax Amsterdam and Real Betis winger, previously served as an assistant coach under Jose Peseiro, who recently departed as head coach after leading the team for two years up to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 52-year-old football icon, who made his scoring debut for Nigeria in 1991 against Burkina Faso, brings a wealth of experience to the role.

Notably, George played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s football history, contributing to iconic moments such as assisting Rashidi Yekini’s historic goal in the FIFA World Cup against Bulgaria in 1994.

Additionally, he scored the goal that secured Nigeria’s first-ever FIFA World Cup finals appearance against Algeria in 1993.

George, hailing from a family of football stars, including his elder brother Alari and late younger brother Igeniwari, is set to lead the Super Eagles from the touchline, marking his debut as the team’s interim coach.

His appointment comes as the squad prepares for the upcoming friendly matches against Ghana and Mali during this month’s international window.

In preparation for the clash with Ghana, 12 of the 22 expected players have arrived in Marrakech, including notable names such as Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi, and goalkeeper Francis Uzoho. However, the team will be without the services of key players Gabriel Osho, Tyronne Ebuehi, Victor Osimhen, and Taiwo Awoniyi, who have been sidelined due to injuries.

The Super Eagles are currently stationed at the Adam Park Hotel in Marrakech, with the remaining players expected to join the squad ahead of the friendly encounter. Following the match against Ghana, the team will face off against Les Aigles of Mali at the same venue on March 26.

As Finidi George takes the reins for the Super Eagles, Nigerian football fans eagerly anticipate an exciting display from the national team as they continue their preparations for future competitions.
