Robinho Arrested After Nine-year Jail Sentence [Video]

Brazil footballing icon Robinho has been arrested after he was slammed with a nine-year jail sentence for rape, MySportDab reports.

In 2013, Robinho, who was then a 28-year-old footballer playing for AC Milan, was indicted for his role in an alleged gang rape of an Albanian woman in a nightclub in Milan.

In 2017, he was prosecuted and found guilty but could not be arrested by the Italian authorities as he had left AC Milan and returned to Brazil where he signed a contract with boyhood club Santos.

In 2020, Robinho, who had insisted he is innocent, filed an appeal against the judgment but the appeal was turned down.

Meanwhile, a public outcry had erupted in Brazil over Santos’ decision to hand the footballing icon a new contract while the player was battling rape charges.

Amid the whirlpool of criticisms swirling around the player, Santos rip apart Robinho’s contract.

In 2022, Robinho’s second appeal to Italian Supreme Court to overturn the judgment was turned down again.

After the Italian Supreme Court’s judgment, Italian prosecutors began proceedings to have Robinho extradited to Brazil for his arrest and detention.

Brazil refused to extradite the former player as per their constitutional provisions but were open to hearing the case in Brazil Supreme Court of Justice.

On Wednesday, Robinho was found guilty by 9 of the 15 justices of the Brazil Supreme Court and was slammed with a nine-year jail term.

Robinho made a plea to pause his detention pending his appeal but the plea was turned down.

On Thursday, a viral footage available at the end of this post shows the Brazilian football legend arrested by Brazilian authorities to serve his nine-year jail term.

The 40-year-old has insisted he is innocent and is set to appeal the judgment but will do so behind bars, serving the nine-year jail term.
