Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has appointed Tunde Onakoya, Guinness World Record holder for the longest chess marathon, as the sports ambassador of the state, MySportDab Reports.
The announcement came during a meeting between Governor Abiodun and Onakoya at the governor’s office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Thursday, underscoring the state’s commitment to celebrating homegrown talent.
Governor Abiodun lauded Onakoya’s remarkable achievement on the global stage, attributing it to his unwavering determination, resilience, and hard work.
He emphasized Onakoya’s role as an inspiration to countless young people nationwide, highlighting his efforts in establishing the ‘Chess in Slums Africa’ foundation to empower underprivileged children and provide them with hope for a better future.
In a bid to further honor Onakoya’s contributions to the sporting world, Governor Abiodun announced the commencement of the Ogun State Chess Competition, set to be held across various regions of the state.

Addressing Onakoya directly, Governor Abiodun declared, “Today, we will be officially appointing you as our State Sports Ambassador.” He underscored the significance of this appointment, particularly in light of Ogun State’s hosting of the National Sports Festival later in the year, where chess is slated to be featured prominently.
