Legendary South American duo Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez struck as Inter Miami returned to the summit of the Eastern Conference table in the MLS following a dramatic 3-2 victory over Sporting Kansas City, MySportDab reports.
The Herons had endured a five-match winless run prior to the game and had crashed out of the CONCACAF Champions Cup following back-to-back defeats to Monterrey.
In the MLS, a three-match winless streak saw the Florida-based outfit lost 4-0 to New York Red Bulls, drew 1-1 with New York City, and drew Colorado 2-2 in their last MLS game.
The short relapse of disappointing results saw the star-studded side slip off the summit of the Eastern Conference but they are now back to gears, rising to the top with a dramatic victory over Sporting Kansas away from home at the Arrowhead Stadium.
It was certainly going to be a long night for Inter Miami after Thommy fired Sporting Kansas City into the lead just six minutes into the game.
12 minutes later, Gomez restored parity for the away side, scoring to tie the score at 1-1. The two goals were enough to send both sides to the break with the scores tied.
Away from an unconvincing and shaky first-half start, Inter Miami upped their game in the second half and it paid off immediately.
Lionel Messi fired the away side into the lead nine minutes before the hour-mark.
Seven minutes after Messi’s goal, clutch Thommy came roaring again as he scored again to bag his brace and fritter away the narrow lead but Inter Miami were not done.
In the 71st minute, Luis Suarez scored again for the visitors to restore the lead and pave the way for the Herons’ return to winning ways.
Trailing 3-2 with barely 19 minutes left to play, Sporting Kansas City made a late push to find the equaliser all to no avail as Inter Miami held on to secure a crucial victory after the final whistle.
The win has seen the Gerardo Martino-led side climb back to the top of the Eastern Conference table in the MLS with 15 points from 9 games.
They will hope to continue on winning ways when hosting Nashville in their next game on Sunday, April 21.
