Super Eagles head coach Finidi George has announced that he will not play a role in selecting a new captain for the Nigerian national team, MySportDab Reports.

With current captain Ahmed Musa inactive and expected to be omitted from the squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic, PAOK Salonica defender William Troost-Ekong has been serving as the stand-in captain.

During a media tour, George emphasized that the decision of who wears the captain’s armband lies solely with the players. He stated, “It’s not my responsibility to pick a captain.

It’s the responsibility of the team.” George highlighted the importance of the players feeling comfortable with their chosen leader and stressed that they would have the final say in selecting the new captain.

Referring to previous coach Sunday Oliseh’s approach, George reiterated that his philosophy aligns with allowing the players to decide their leader. “People said Oliseh picked his captain and Finidi George should do the same. It’s not my responsibility to pick a captain,” he affirmed.

George’s stance reflects a commitment to empowering the players and fostering a sense of ownership within the team. By entrusting the captaincy decision to the players themselves, George aims to ensure that the chosen leader commands the respect and confidence of the entire squad.

As Nigeria prepares for crucial World Cup qualifiers, the selection of a new captain holds significance in shaping the team’s dynamics and leadership structure.

With Troost-Ekong serving as the interim captain, the Super Eagles will look to the collective wisdom of the players in determining who will lead them onto the field in the upcoming matches.
