Lookman Reflects on AFCON Experience, Highlights Toughest Match

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has offered insights into his journey at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), shedding light on the most challenging match he faced during the tournament held in Cote d’Ivoire, MySportDab Reports.

Under the stewardship of Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro, Nigeria reached the AFCON final for the first time since 2013. Lookman played a pivotal role, emerging as the team’s leading scorer with three goals and one assist, showcasing his attacking prowess.

Reflecting on his contributions to the team’s success, Lookman expressed satisfaction with his performance while acknowledging the collective effort of the squad. “Being an attacking player, you always want to help the team in that way. So yeah, I was very glad. I was happy to do that. But the team was amazing and everybody helped out,” he remarked.

Recalling the tough encounters faced by Nigeria during the tournament, Lookman pinpointed the opener against Equatorial Guinea as the most challenging match.

He cited the adverse weather conditions, particularly the intense heat and humidity experienced during the 2 pm kickoff, as significant factors contributing to the difficulty of the game.

“Probably Equatorial Guinea because we played at 2 pm, the heat and humidity was tough for us. Probably you have to say that game,” Lookman emphasized.

As Nigeria looks ahead to their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, with fixtures against South Africa and Benin Republic in June, Lookman is poised to continue his contributions to the team’s success. With his experience and skill set, Lookman aims to play a vital role in guiding the Super Eagles towards their World Cup aspirations.
