The Premier League and LaLiga are reportedly plotting a move to boycott FIFA Club World Cup, MySportDab reports.
FIFA announced the restructuring of the inter-continental club competition to encompass more clubs from the participating continents.
Originally, the competition was limited to only the continental champions but will now involve more clubs with 32 teams slated to participate in the maiden edition of the new format.
The competition was planned to kick off in 2025 with clubs spread across the different continents already seeded.
Now, according to The Sun, the competition may face setback with the Premier League and LaLiga – two of the biggest clubs leagues in Europe – ready to boycott the competition.
Premier League chief Richard Masters and his LaLiga counterpart Javier Tebas are to be vehemently opposed to the tournament. The pair argues the competition will further strain the congested football calendar.
They have called on FIFA to reconsider the decision to host the tournament next year while players are batting with fatigue, fitness issues, and frequent injuries due to multiple fronts of the tournament from club domestic club competitions, and continental competitions, to international football.
If the Premier League and LaLiga withdraw from the tournament, this means Premier League and LaLiga clubs, who have been seeded in the competition will not be allowed to partake in the tournament.
Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, leads the list of Premier League clubs that have secured their slot in the competition with Real Madrid and Barcelona making the cut from Spain.
