Argentina have made it a perfect group stage run in Copa America 2024 after easing past Peru in their final group A match, MySportDab reports.
The defending and world champions opened their Copa America 2024 campaign with a 2-0 victory over Canada before a narrow 1-0 win over Chile.
The win against Peru has seen the team secure the maximum 9 points in Group A to win the group and progress to the next round of the competition.
As expected, it was a difficult game for Peru, who had went into the game with a point from a defeat against Canada and a draw against Chile.
Argentina dominated every aspect of the match but it was still a deadlocked first half. Despite struggling to match the pace and momentum of their dominant opponents, Peru made well their attempt on the low blocks and prevented the scissor-edged attacking arsenal of the Argentines from finding the back in the net.
However, that changed in the second half as Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez finally got the Albiceleste into the lead in the 47th minute. Latching on a long ball over the top, the 2023-24 Serie A top scorer beat Peru goalkeeper with lobbed right-footed strike to make it 1-0.
It was a dragging barren run after the 1-0 lead. Peru did little to mount a comeback but had the game in control checking Argentina’s offensives. However, they were finally dealt another blow when Lautaro Martinez scored again four minutes from regulation time to double the lead and seal victory.
It ended 2-0 after the final whistle with the Argentines securing maximum 9 points to top the group. In the other Group A final match, Canada held Chile to a goalless draw to finish second and join Argentina in the knockout of the competition.
