Uruguay have knocked out Brazil from Copa America 2024, thanks to a penalty shootout victory after a barren draw, MySportDab reports.

The two teams locked horns in a heated quarterfinal clash on Sunday night and it ended squares. Brazil dominated proceedings but went profligate with a series of chances created earlier on.

Uruguay, also buoyed with depth of experienced players, staged a formidable challenge but could only manage just one attempt on target against Brazil’s three.

The tightly contested clash ended squares at the break and it wasn’t off the trajectory in the second half.  In the 70th minute, Uruguay player, Nantes, saw red card, giving Brazil a numerical advantage.

The Dorivial Junior-led side wielded more dominance after the red card, capitalizing on their numerical advantage but could not still break the goal deadlock.

At the blast of the final whistle, it was still goalless with both sides heading into penalties to decide the tie. Gimenez, who came on for Uruguay to replace injured Ronald Araujo, missed his spot-kick.

Real Madrid defender Eder Militao also missed his spot-kick for Brazil, including former Aston Villa and now Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz.

The rest of the penalty-takers converted their spot-kicks with Uruguay running out with a 4-2 victory to eliminate Brazil from the competition.

In the other quarter-final clash, Colombia eased past Panama with a thumping 5-0 victory. It was a rout from the first half of the game. Cordoba scored eight minutes into proceedings before Rodriguez doubled the lead from the spot in the 15th minute.

In the 41st minute, Liverpool star, Luis Diaz, added to the tally to make it a 3-0 emphatic first-half win. Despite the 3-0 lead, Colombia still dominated proceedings in the second half.

Twenty minutes before regulation time, Rios registered his name on the scoresheet as well to make it a 4-0 victory.

Before the game was wrapped up, Miguel made it a resounding victory for Colombia, scoring in the 90+5th minute to make it 5-0.

The win has seen the team set up a semi-final pairing with Uruguay while Panama crash out of the competition.
