Sarina Wiegman could become the first female football manager to manage men’s senior national team, MySportDab reports.
According to talkSPORT, the Lionesses head coach is among top candidates lineup to replace Gareth Southgate.
Wiegman led England to UEFA Women’s Championship victory in 2022 and reached final of FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023.
The Dutch tactician has earned widespread acclaim with her prolific managerial strides with England since taking over as manager in 2021
Since Southgate announced his resignation as England manager, Wiegman has dominated the conversation as the next best hand to take over from the former Middlesbrough manager.
Should she be named England national team head coach, she will become the first female manager to head an elite men’s senior national team.
Meanwhile, she has reacted to rumors linking her to the soon-to-be vacant England role. When asked about the job, the 54-year-old brushed off the claims.
“It is not good to even have this conversation. I am still contracted to England women national team,” she said.
Wiegman is contracted to England women national team till 2027 and is hoping of defending the Euro 2022 Women’s Championship after qualifying the team for the playoffs.
Southgate announced his decision to step down as England manager after he lost his second consecutive Euro final in Berlin Germany.
Announcing his decision on Tuesday, the 53-year-old said he was proud of what he could achieve with the team but believes it is the right time to step down
“I am a proud Englishman and happy for the opportunity t manage the national team. I have given it my all and believes it is time to step down,” Southgate said.
Apart from Sarina Wiegman, other managers that are linked to the England job include; Jose Mourinho, Mauricio Pochettino, Jurgen Klopp, and Julian Nagelsmann.
England will play their first match in post-Southgate era on September 7, 2024. A new manager is expected to be appointed before then.
