The Super Falcons of Nigeria suffered a 1-0 defeat to Brazil in their opening game of the 2024 Paris Olympics. Gabi Nunes’ 37th-minute strike secured the win for Brazil in Bordeaux on Thursday, marking a disappointing start for Nigeria, MySportDab reports.
Head coach Randy Waldrum made a surprising decision to leave star striker Asisat Oshoala on the bench, opting instead for Chinwendu Ihezuo to lead the attack. Without the former Barcelona Femeni star, Nigeria struggled to create clear-cut chances for most of the game.
The Super Falcons’ brightest moments came through the sheer determination of captain Rashidat Ajibade. Using her speed and skill, Ajibade created several opportunities for Nigeria.
One notable moment saw Ajibade deliver a sweeping cross to Ihezuo, whose effort was unfortunately weak and easily saved by Brazil’s goalkeeper, Lorena.
Shortly thereafter, Christy Ucheibe forced Lorena into another sharp save, but these chances were few and far between. Brazil began to dominate the game, with 38-year-old Marta showcasing her experience and creativity.
The six-time Women’s World Footballer of the Year thought she had given Brazil the lead in the 36th minute, but her strike was disallowed after a VAR review for offside.
However, there was no VAR intervention to save Nigeria just minutes later. A lapse in concentration allowed Gabi Nunes to capitalize, smashing the ball off the post and into the net beyond Chiamaka Nnadozie, Nigeria’s goalkeeper.
The Super Falcons struggled to find a way back into the game, and despite a late rally, Brazil held on to secure all three points.
The loss puts Nigeria in a challenging position as they prepare to face Spain in their next Group C match on Sunday, followed by a crucial game against Japan on July 31.
This defeat underscores the need for Nigeria to regroup and strategize if they hope to advance in the tournament. All eyes will be on Waldrum’s tactical decisions and whether Oshoala will feature prominently in the upcoming matches.
