Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez will not taste football action for a couple of games following a ban by CONMEBOL, MySportDab reports.
The former Benfica forward, who has struggled for game time recently, is set to miss five international matches for his national team Uruguay.
According to a report shared by The Mail, South American football governing body, CONMEBOL, have hit the 25-year-old with a five-match ban following his role in the chaotic 2024 Copa America semifinal loss to Colombia.
In viral footage on social media, Darwin Nunez made the core of the three Uruguay players – Bentancur and Ronald Araujo – who fought Colombian fans after the loss.
Nunez was seen taking to the stand and throwing punches against the fans. Another footage also showed the footballer flinging one of the foldable chairs in the stands on the pitch.
His reaction has been deemed unprofessional and breaching CONMEBOL code of conduct for professional players, hence the ban.
Nunez is not the only player that has been hit with the ban. His co-horts – Bentancur and Araujo -have also been banned but for fewer matches.
Bentancur has been hit with a four-match ban while Araujo will serve three. It is understood the ban is only applicable to international football not club action.
The three players will miss Uruguay’s next international matches which are all World Cup qualifiers until the expiration of the ban.
The recent development is likely to take a further toll on Darwin Nunez’s career. The forward has managed only 20 minutes in Liverpool’s two Premier League games this season and will hope to reignite the spark in his career under new manager Arne Slot.
