Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has expressed his desire for the Nigerian team to begin the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco on a high note, MySportDab Reports.
Speaking in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, Awoniyi emphasized the team’s determination to excel in the tournament after securing qualification.
Awoniyi highlighted the Super Eagles’ potential to dominate in Africa, stating, “We have what it takes to win every game in Africa. It’s about putting everything together and playing for the country with pride.”
Awoniyi’s return to the national team comes after a lengthy absence due to an injury sustained during Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Lesotho in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The striker expressed his excitement to be back, acknowledging the quality of the players selected for the upcoming matches.
“It’s a great privilege to play for the Super Eagles. Everyone called up is excited, and I believe we will all give our best for the country,” Awoniyi said.
The forward also addressed his club situation, acknowledging that his absence due to injury has affected his regular starting position at Nottingham Forest. However, he remains optimistic about regaining more playing time, adding, “I am playing week in, week out, and I believe that will give me more opportunities.”
The Super Eagles will face the Cheetahs of Benin Republic on Saturday in Uyo for the 2025 AFCON qualifier, followed by a match against Rwanda on September 10 in Kigali.
