Dominik Mysterio has built a wrestling career distinct from his father’s despite carrying the family name, transforming from a clean-cut tag team partner alongside Rey Mysterio into one of WWE’s most despised modern heels, known as Dirty Dom.

He was born April 5, 1997, in San Diego, California. Dominik Mysterio is the son of WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio, born Óscar Gutiérrez, and Angie Gutiérrez.
He has a younger sister, Aaliyah Gutiérrez. His wrestling lineage runs deep even beyond his father: his great uncle is the original Rey Mysterio Sr., his cousin is El Hijo de Rey Mysterio, and his godfather is fellow wrestler Konnan, who also served as one of his early trainers.
Dominik grew up around his father’s career closely enough to become part of it directly, appearing as an eight-year-old in a real, televised WWE storyline in which Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero fought over custody of him.
He began formal wrestling training in 2017 under Jay Lethal and Konnan, later training further with Lance Storm and his father at the WWE Performance Center.

He made his Royal Rumble debut on January 31, 2021. That May, he and Rey defeated Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode at WrestleMania Backlash to win the SmackDown Tag Team Championship, Dominik’s first title and the first father-son tag title win in WWE history, a reign that lasted 63 days.
Turning Heel and Joining The Judgment Day
In 2022, Rey and Dominik began feuding with The Judgment Day, Finn Bálor, Damian Priest, and Rhea Ripley, over the group’s efforts to recruit Dominik away from his father. The tension escalated across the following months.
On Thanksgiving that year, Dominik was filmed inviting Ripley to the Mysterio family home; Rey refused to let them inside.
On Christmas Eve, Dominik and Ripley visited his grandparents’ house, leading to a real confrontation outside between Dominik, Ripley, Rey, and Dominik’s mother, Angie, in which Dominik shoved his father.
Angie slapped Ripley, resulting in police being called and Dominik being arrested, a moment WWE built directly into its storyline.
The betrayal became official at Clash at the Castle on September 3, 2022, when, after Bálor and Priest lost to Edge and Rey, Dominik attacked Edge with a low blow and clotheslined his own father, turning heel for the first time in his career and officially joining The Judgment Day two days later.
What followed was the full birth of Dirty Dom, an arrogant, taunting character who began an on-screen relationship with Rhea Ripley, who regularly helped him win matches, including his first NXT North American Championship.
Dominik faced his father directly at WrestleMania 39 in 2023 and WrestleMania XL in 2024, losing both times, while racking up wins elsewhere, including victories over AJ Styles and eventual Judgment Day rival Damian Priest, and a second NXT North American Championship reign.
Speaking about his father’s trademark mask years into the feud, Dominik offered a characteristically brutal, kayfabe-fueled explanation to Sportskeeda Wrestling, saying he’d unfortunately lived with the man for over 15 years, calling him a deadbeat with no hair who has to wear a mask because he’s ugly, a line that captured the character’s entire persona in a single interview.
Liv Morgan Era and Championship Wins
In a shocking twist at SummerSlam 2024, Dominik betrayed Rhea Ripley, whom the storyline had nicknamed Mami, to align instead with Liv Morgan, forming a new version of The Judgment Day.
With Morgan pushing him to new heights on screen, Dominik won his first-ever WrestleMania match at WrestleMania 41 in 2025, capturing the WWE Intercontinental Championship in a Fatal Four-Way match by pinning Finn Bálor with a frog splash, also defeating Bron Breakker and Penta in the process.
He celebrated the win at the post-show by declaring himself the GICOAT, the Greatest Intercontinental Champion Of All Time, and the greatest Mysterio of all time, adding that he was used to being booed.
Still, he felt he’d finally shed the dead weight of what he called his deadbeat dad. He lost the title before regaining it at Survivor Series with Liv Morgan’s help, before dropping it again on March 3, 2026, this time to Penta, in a reign that lasted just 19 days, a loss the storyline attributed to a curse placed on Dominik and Judgment Day teammate JD McDonagh by comedy wrestler Danhausen.
Dominik went on to feud with former Judgment Day ally Finn Bálor through a grudge match at WrestleMania 42, which Bálor won.
AAA and Current Storylines
Following WWE’s 2025 purchase of Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, Dominik became a fixture of that promotion as well, competing across WWE, NXT, and AAA events.
He won the AAA Mega Championship by defeating El Hijo del Vikingo and has defended it since against opponents including Dragon Lee and the Original El Grande Americano, building a reputation in AAA as a wrestler who can win on his own merit without Judgment Day backup.
