Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim has broken his silence on reports linking him to a move to Manchester United, MySportDab reports.
Portuguese outlets report that the two-time Primeira Liga winner is close to joining Manchester United as the new manager after Dutch tactician Erik ten Hag was fired.
The report came a few hours after Erik ten Hag was shown the exit door with further tips that the club had been in talks with the Portuguese long before ten Hag’s sack.
The reports of Ruben Amorim’s imminent Sporting Lisbon exit to United were further validated when Sporting Lisbon issued a statement confirming United are ready to pay the manager’s £8.9m release clause and buy him out of the club’s contract.
Also, MySportDab learnt Amorim could be in the dugout as the new Man United manager as early as in the next Premier League match against Chelsea at the weekend.
Now, Amorim has appeared to quash the report.
Speaking after Sporting Lisbon’s 3-1 win over Nacional in the Primeira Liga on Tuesday, the highly-rated boss revealed he has been in talks with United but has yet to settle terms with the Old Trafford outfit.
“Manchester United is interested, but it’s my choice,’ he said. ‘Until everything is decided, we won’t be making any noise. I have nothing useful to say. I will take on whatever I want to do, as I have always done.
”I don’t want to fuel this issue. There is the club’s statement to the CMVM, apart from that we don’t know the details yet,” he added.
Ruben Amorim’s match against Nacional was expected to farewell game before his move to United.
But as things stand, no one knows whether that will be his last game or not.
Meanwhile, sources close to Manchester United say the club are hopeful of completing a move for Amorim as soon as possible and possibly bringing him to Old Trafford before the Chelsea match.
Ruben Amorim, 39, won the Primeira Liga two times with Sporting Lisbon, including back-to-back Portugal Cup.
He was interviewed for Liverpool and West Ham United jobs in the summer before the two clubs went for Arne Slot and Steve Cooper, respectively.
