Victor Boniface has reacted to his exclusion from the nominees’ list for the 2024 CAF Men’s Player of the Year Award, MySportDab reports.

The prolific Bayer Leverkusen forward had a sensational debut in the German top flight with the Die Werkself, helping win the Bundesliga title and DFB-Pokal triumph.

He won the Bundesliga Player of the Month three times in a row following standout performances for the team. He also made Bundesliga team of the season and contributed immensely as the team pushed through to the final of the Europa League.

Overall, Boniface scored 21 goals with 10 assists for Bayer Leverkusen in all competitions before being grounded with an injury that ruled him out of action for months.

He made Nigeria’s squad for 2023 AFCON but was ruled out of the tournament due to injury while in training with the Super Eagles.

Based on his stats, some analysts think the Nigerian footballer merits a slot in the 10-man shortlist for the prestigious individual football award in Africa.

Reacting to a post on X that listed his accomplishments in the year and queried the 10-man shortlist, Boniface took a rather lighter approach.

He tweeted;

“Rookie of the season. Team of the season. No worry I no play AFCON. Na why I dey wait for memes d’or.”

Victor Boniface is not the only top player that has been controversially left off the award nominees for the year. MySportDab had compiled a five-man list of other top African footballers that have been omitted.

Meanwhile, Victor Boniface is set for another blockbuster campaign with Bayer Leverkusen. He has scored five goals in seven Bundesliga campaigns and has one in the Champions League.
