Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur will miss a lengthy count of matches for the club after the latest clampdown on him by the the FA, MySportDab reports.

The footballer reportedly used a racial slur on his Tottenham Hotspur teammate and captain Son Heung-Min while on international duties with his national team, Uruguay, in September 2024.

He was charged by the FA and the case referred to the Independent regulatory commission where he was found guilty and handed the penalty

FA statement confirming the clampdown read;

“Rodrigo Bentancur denied this charge, but the independent regulatory commission found it to be proven and imposed his sanctions following a hearing,” said an FA statement.

Details of the penalty, as confirmed by the BBC, shows Rodrigo Bentacur has been banned for seven matches. He has also been fined £100,000.

This means he will not be in action for Tottenham Hotspur until December 26 and will miss Premier League matches against Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea, plus Spurs’ League Cup quarter-final against Manchester United.

However, the penalty will not affect his involvement in Tottenham Hotspur’s campaign in the Europa League.

Amidst the clampdown by the FA, Bentacur had reportedly tendered an apology to Son, insisting he didn’t meant to racially abuse the player and was just joking.

He posted on social media describing his comment as a ‘very bad joke’ but the case was already taken up by English football authorities.

The Uruguayan  has been at the heart of Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur setup since last season. He played the club’s all Premier League matches this season and registered his first goal of the campaign during the shock defeat to Ipswich Town.
