Leganes pulled an incredible upset in La Liga with a shock 1-0 victory over Barcelona at the Estadio Llius Companys Olympic Stadium, MySportDab reports.
The Catalan giants went into the game top of the La Liga table with 38 points – the same points as second-placed Atletico Madrid and a point better than arch-domestic rivals Real Madrid in third place.
With the race for the 2024-25 La Liga title now tightening up to a three-horse marathon, the Hansi Flick-led side needed nothing less from victory to maintain their stranglehold on the top of the table.
Meanwhile, Leganes went into the game hovering around the relegation zone and needed victory to steer themselves to safety.
With the two teams meeting on the hills of contrasting fortunes in the Spanish top-flight, Leganes’ chances in the clash were largely negligible.
But in a crazy twist of events, all the visitors needed was an early goal by Sergio Gonzalez and the heroism of their goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic to scale through.
Gonzalez opened the scoring thundering home a powerful header from a corner kick in the 4th minute and the rest was history.
Barcelona slept on chances after chances for the remaining 86 minutes of the game without a breakthrough.
Sheer ill luck coupled with Dmitrovic’s countless saves ensured the Catalan giants surrendered all three points in the clash.
It was an entirely one-sided affair with Barcelona holding sway throughout after conceding but a breakthrough wasn’t feasible.
Leganes held on to secure what would be their biggest victory in the campaign after the final whistle.
The loss has seen Barcelona lose their hold on the pole of the race at least tentatively. They are still top with 38 points but have played a game more than Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid with 38 and 37 points, respectively.
A win for the two clubs in their outstanding matches, will demote the Catalan side from the top to third on the table.
