Wayne Rooney has been sacked as Plymouth’s manager following a poor run of results in the English second tier, MySportDab reports.
Plymouth confirmed the end of their collaboration with the Premier League in a club statement which reads;
“Plymouth Argyle can confirm that the club and Head Coach Wayne Rooney have mutually agreed to part ways with immediate effect.
“We would like to thank Wayne and his team for all their efforts and wish them well for the future.”
The statement also confirmed Rooney will be expected to leave the club with his Assistant Head Coach Mike Phelan and first team coach Simon Ireland.
First team coach Kevin Nancekivell and Club Captain Joe Edwards has been mandated to take charge of the team’s next fixture against Bristol City on January 1, 2025.
Rooney has barely managed seven months in the dugout as Plymouth manager. He joined the club in May 2024 and has struggled to get off the mark.
His first match ended in a 4-0 loss and his last match equally ended in a defeat with the team now stuck at the bottom of the EFL Championship with just 18 points from 23 games.
Overall, Rooney has taken charge of 25 games in all competitions as Plymouth boss and has managed just 5 wins, 6 draws, and 14 defeats.
It is the third time his managerial spell has ended on a disappointing note after similar deadlocks with Derby County and DC United in the MLS.
It is still unclear whether he will settle for another managerial role following the unsuccessful forays.
