Leon Balogun has revealed he wants to play for Nigeria’s Super Eagles again in the country’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

The 36-year-old was left out of Jose Peseiro’s squad list for the 2023 AFCON tournament and he last played for Nigeria in June 2022 in the 10-0 thrashing of São Tomé and Príncipe, in which he appeared as a late substitute.

After making few appearances last season, Balogun has enjoyed a return to form this campaign under Rangers boss Philippe Clement.

The experienced defender has made 18 appearances, one short of his total for the whole of last season, and has registered one goal and one assist for the Scottish powerhouses.

Balogun was on Brila to clarify his Super Eagles availability, as he said: “I’ve always been there. I have not retired from international football. “I had an unfortunate injury before the World Cup break, but I am now fit and looking to represent Nigeria once more.”

Rangers’ latest move to keep the Nigerian international defender over Manchester United’s Jonny Evans is testament to the value and experience of Balogun which could become an asset for the Super Eagles under Coach Eric Chelle.

While Balogun shines in Scotland, his leadership and defensive consistency might fortify Nigeria’s hopes in the World Cup Qualifiers.
