Alex Iwobi Breaks Kanu’s Premier League Record, Inches Closer to Nigerian Landmark

Super Eagles and Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has etched his name in Premier League folklore after breaking the record of Nigerian legend Nwankwo Kanu as the country’s most featured outfielder in the league, MySportDab Reports.

Iwobi reached the landmark in Fulham’s 3-2 loss to West Ham United on Sunday, playing in his 274th Premier League game to overtake Kanu’s record of 273.

The 27-year-old has had a solid career in England’s top flight, turning out 123 times for Arsenal, 100 for Everton, and 51 for Fulham.

Though Fulham lost, Iwobi was outstanding in the match as he scored twice in the 51st and 76th minutes, but West Ham won with goals from Carlos Soler, Tomas Soucek, and Lucas Paqueta.

With this feat, Iwobi is now second on the all-time Nigerian Premier League appearance list, trailing only Shola Ameobi, who featured in 289 games for Newcastle United.

Just 15 more games will be needed by the midfielder to surpass Ameobi and become Nigeria’s all-time leader in matches played in the Premier League.

Iwobi has been very instrumental for Fulham this season, scoring seven goals and assisting three in all competitions.

His consistency and versatility have made him a key figure for both club and country, further cementing his place as one of the best Nigerian players to ever feature in the Premier League.
