Newcastle United have defeated Arsenal in the 2024-25 EFL Cup in the semi-final first leg at the Emirates, MySportDab reports.

Goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon saw the Magpies grab a shock 2-0 away win over the Gunners to boost their chances of qualifying for the final of the competition.

If was a tightly-contested clash with the visitors going toe-to-to with the home side in a rollercoaster.

Arsenal had scores of early chances that would have turned the game around but could not make them count.

Meanwhile, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe effectively had his tactical script yield result. While settling for the low blocks, they retain their threats with quickfire counter-attacks.

Seven minutes after the half-hour, Alexander Isak capped a resilient and strong showing by the visitors with the opening goal, thanks to an assist by Jacob Murphy.

The goal made the difference at the break with Arsenal trailing by the lone strike after countless efforts to mount a comeback failed.

The second half was no different. Arsenal ramped up moves to find an equalizer but struggled with wasted opportunities.

It was a difficult and another unlucky night for Mikel Arteta boys. Meanwhile, against the run of play, Newcastle United dealt a big blow to the hosts’ comeback hopes.

Anthony Gordon scored six minutes into the restart to double the lead for the visitors. It was game over at this point for Arsenal but they had over 30 minutes to stage what would have been a dramatic comeback but could not find a breakthrough.

After scurrying to a 2-0 lead, Newcastle settled deeper for the low blocks curtailing every attempt by the Gunners to nailed home a lifeline goal.

At the blast of the final whistle, it ended with the Tyn-based side winning 2-0 to going into the second leg with a huge advantage.
