Arsenal’s Premier League title aspirations took a hit as they surrendered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners initially dominated, with Gabriel Martinelli opening the scoring in the 35th minute by converting Leandro Trossard’s cross.
Kai Havertz extended the lead in the 55th minute, again assisted by Trossard which saw them cruising at some point.
However, Aston Villa mounted a spirited comeback. Youri Tielemans reduced the deficit with a diving header from Lucas Digne’s delivery.
Shortly after, Ollie Watkins equalized with a volley from Matty Cash’s cross, marking his fourth Premier League goal at the Emirates since joining Villa.
Arsenal thought they had secured a late winner when Mikel Merino’s shot deflected off Havertz into the net, but the goal was disallowed for handball after a VAR review.
However, things ended up with both teams settling for one point each after the 90 minutes with additional time which was played.
This result leaves Arsenal six points behind league leaders Liverpool, who secured a last-minute victory against Brentford.
