Manchester United came close to grabbing what would have been a big win against Liverpool at the death if not for Harry Maguire’s incredible miss, MySportDab reports.
The Red Devils put up a solid performance against Liverpool at Anfield and were close to snatching a momentous win at the death.
With the scoreline tied at 2-2, substitute Joshua Zirkzee picked up a throughball from the right and was through on goal, coming one-on-one against Alisson Becker.
Instead of attempting a strike on goal, he threaded a pass to an on-rushing Maguire. With Alisson wrong-footed and losing his balance after Zirkzee’s pass, Maguire only had the goal and himself to slot in the ball but his faint touch flew above the crossbar.
Seconds after the miss, the referee blew the final whistle and it ended 2-2 with Maguire missing the big chance that would have turned the game around.
Nevertheless, United defied expectations in the game. Lisandro Martinez had gave the away side the lead in the second half after firing a thunderbolt from close range into the roof the net.
A few minutes later, Cody Gakpo scored the leveler after dropping Mathijs de Ligt with an insane nutmeg before firing into the net.
Mohamed Salah scored his 18th goal of the season, converting from the spot after VAR awarded the hosts a penalty for de Ligt’s handball.
The Reds looked set to secure victory but were pegged back to a 2-2 draw courtesy of Amad Diallo’s late equalizer.
It ended all-squared after the final whistle with United grabbing a point and it would have been all three points for the Red Devils had Maguire converted the last-minute chance.
