Kick It Out Presses FIFA for Action on Enzo Fernandez Racism Controversy

The anti-discrimination organization Kick It Out has called on FIFA to explain whether any action has been taken against Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez over his involvement in a racism scandal last summer, MySportDab Reports.

Fernandez, in a video that surfaced after Argentina won the 2024 Copa America, was seen leading a discriminatory chant against French players of African heritage with some of his teammates. A formal complaint by the French Football Federation branded the song “racist and discriminatory.

The Chelsea star later apologised and was subjected to an “internal disciplinary procedure” from his club in July. However, despite the controversy, he was named vice-captain of the team by new head coach Enzo Maresca at the start of the 2024/25 Premier League season.

Kick It Out chief executive Samuel Okafor has written to FIFA president Gianni Infantino and CONMEBOL boss Alejandro Dominguez demanding clarity on whether Fernandez or any of his teammates will face punishment for their actions.

“Despite making inquiries to the FA and FIFA, we and many others have not been told if there has been any investigation or outcome,” Okafor wrote. “Establishing the facts and reaching an outcome should not be an extraordinary or difficult task for organizations serious about tackling discrimination.”

Okafor also highlighted the punishment of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, who was recently banned for seven matches by the FA for making discriminatory remarks about teammate Son Heung-min.

“Many fans have asked why the Argentina team has not been held to account in the same manner,” Okafor stated. “It is crucial for football authorities to demonstrate consistency in addressing discrimination.”

The letter also pointed out that Chelsea had committed to educating Fernandez on the issue but stressed the need for broader accountability. “This incident has impacted communities both in England and globally. It is essential that actions match the rhetoric of fighting discrimination,” Okafor added.

Kick It Out stressed that FIFA’s credibility is at stake. “If federations claim action is being taken, then accountability must follow. Otherwise, these commitments to fighting discrimination mean nothing,” the letter concluded.
