Enzo Maresca insists Filip Jorgensen is currently Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper ahead of Robert Sanchez, MySportDab Reports.
Jorgensen will continue in goal during Chelsea’s Premier League meeting with Brighton on Friday, following Sanchez’s struggles this term.
He was left out of the Blues’ 2-1 league victory against West Ham, but was restored to the side for their FA Cup defeat to Brighton. Nonetheless, Maresca indicated Jorgensen is his favored choice for league games.
“I said that the Filip solution was a way for Robert to also take some time to recuperate mentally and physically,” Maresca said. “But it’s not the idea to change the keeper game by game. Filip is our keeper at the moment.”
Sanchez has had a rough season and is already tied for the Premier League lead in errors leading directly to goals (five; with Arijanet Muric). He has let in 27 goals from shots with an xGOT value of 28.16.
His 1.2 goals prevented ranked just 15th among goalkeepers to make at least five appearances this season.
The latter was a decision, according to Maresca, after speaking with both goalkeepers. “I had a chat with Robert a few days prior, leading into the West Ham game where I made the decision to play Filip. I haven’t talked to him since, and obviously Filip knows what’s going on,” he added.
Jorgensen now has the opportunity to establish himself as Chelsea’s first-choice keeper, however Sanchez has an uncertain future with Maresca.
