Arsenal have crashed out of the EFL Cup after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United at St James Park, MySportDab reports.

The Gunners went into the game on the back of a shock 2-0 home defeat to the Magpies in the first leg and needed three unreplied goals to muddle through.

Fresh from a comprehensive 5-1 win over Manchester City in their last fixture, the Mikel Arteta-led side were tipped to ace the herculean of task of overturning the first leg deficit against the Tyn-based side.

However, it appeared they were in for another disappointing night against the determined Eddie Howe-led side.

Right from the start, a rickety defense counter-balanced their spirited offensives and the paid dearly for it just 19 minutes into the game.

Murphy scored a stunner to fire Newcastle into the lead to further pile the odds of a possible comeback against the visitors.

The goal saw Arsenal trail 3-0 on aggregate and it was pretty clear they are crashing out of the competition.

After Murphy’s opener, they however, stepped up the press to find an equalizer but could not find a breakthrough.

A firm Newcastle held tenuously to the lead at the break to close in on reaching the finals of the competition.

In the second half, the Gunners’ faint hopes finally fizzled out after Anthony Gordon nailed home Newcastle’s second goal eight minutes before the hour mark.

The goal saw the Magpies extend their aggregate win margin to 4-0 foreclosing any hopes of the Gunners’ possible comeback.

The game ended with Newcastle winning 2-0 to bundle out the Londoners with a comprehensive aggregate win and secure a place in the finals.
