Real Madrid have been held by arch-domestic and cross-city rivals Atletico Madrid in a seething La Liga clash on Saturday, MySportDab reports.

The top-of-the-table clash saw the two sides share spoils after settling for a dramatic 1-1 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Real Madrid went into the game with a point clear at the top with the visitors in second place.

A win for either of the two teams would have seen them gain advantage in the La Liga title race which has gathered momentum since the second half of the campaign got underway.

Before the match, a seething row over refereeing was taking center stage after Real Madrid President Florentino Perez slammed the domestic referees for poor officiating.

Just a few minutes into the game, it appeared Los Blancos’ fears were affirmed as Real Madrid conceded a controversial penalty.

Aurelien Tchouameni who deputized at the center-back role due to Anthony Rudiger’s injury had his leg stick out to clip down Samuel Lino in the box.

However, the incident was more of an accidental scene with Molino appearing to have intentionally rushed into Tchouameni’s leg before falling to the ground.

VAR called for a re-check and after the referee took a look at the pitchside monitor, he awarded the spot-kick.

Julian Alvarez converted it with aplomb to give the visitors the lead and the goal was enough to earn them a lead at the break.

Real  Madrid fought back in the second half to equalize with Kylian Mbappe slotting home the ball from close range after goal-mouth scramble.

Mbappe’s strike happened to be the last goal in the game with the two teams settling for a 1-1 draw after the final whistle.

Real Madrid are still top of the La Liga with 50 points – a point clear of the city rivals in second place while Barcelona, who have a game in hand, are third with 45 points.
