Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe has been re-elected unopposed for another four-year term until 2029. The South African businessman was re-elected at the CAF Extraordinary General Assembly in Cairo on Wednesday, MySportDab Reports.

Motsepe was elected in 2021 after several other candidates withdrew and has presided over a period of major growth for African football.

During his time in office, he increased the number of African teams at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, drove up prize money for CAF competitions and achieved greater financial stability.

His stewardship has led to CAF earning a $72 million (£55.5 million) profit for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire —18 times the revenue earned from the 2022 edition.

“I guess partly I was shocked at the big insistence of continuity,” Motsepe told BBC Sport Africa. “The progress has been good but there’s a lot of work to do.”

Cameroon soccer legend Samuel Eto’o was also elected unopposed as the Central Africa representative on the CAF Executive Committee.

That relates to the suspension he was issued by FIFA and CAF in 2024 for breaking disciplinary rules when he became an ambassador with a betting company, before the former Barcelona and Chelsea striker became president of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot).

Eto’o, despite prior controversies, remains a powerful presence in African football administration. Faizal named on CAF Executives Committee for Africa This is one of many post-playing achievements of a man who has continued to make strides for the growth of the sport across the continent.
