Argentina opened an eight-point gap at the top of the CONMEBOL 2026 World Cup Qualifiers with a thumping victory over arch-continental rivals Brazil, MySportDab reports.
Lionel Scaloni’s star boys turned the match which was expected to be a blockbuster to another stroll in the park.
Right from the kickoff, Argentina left no one in doubt of their chances in the game as they started off impressively.
Just four minutes into the game, Atletico Madrid forward and former Manchester City star Julian Alvarez fired Argentina into the lead.
Brazil weren’t ready to go down so quick against the hosts as they fought hard to come back into the game but the Argentines kept pace with a dominant showing going forward.
Eight minutes after Julian Alvarez’s goal, Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez doubled the lead for the hosts.
Going down by two goals just before the quarter-hour was shocking but Dorivial Junior’s side were definitely not pushovers.
Four minutes before the half-hour, Wolverhampton Wanders’ attacking midfielder Matheus Cunha put one back for the Selecao to halve the deficit.
Cuhna’s goal brought back hopes of a potential comeback for the away side but Argentina weren’t done yet.
Eight minutes before the break, Liverpool midfielder Mac Allister, latching on an assist from Enzo Fernandez, found the back of the net for the world champions, restoring their two-goal lead.
Brazil’s shabby showing in the first half came to the fore after Mac Allister’s goal but they still had the second 45 to get it right.
In the second half, it was still a disappointment for Dorivial Junior’s side as Argentina continued on their dominant showing even scoring the fourth goal to make it 4-1.
The game ended with the Argentines grabbing a deserved 4-1 victory over the Selecao – one of their biggest victory in a competitive match.
