The boxing fraternity has been thrown into mourning as Nigerian professional boxer Gabriel Oluwaseun Olanrewaju collapses and dies during a boxing fight, MySportDab reports.
Footage of the incident showed the deceased drifting back awkwardly after being punched by his opponent before collapsing to the ground.
The medical team rushed to his aid but he was fast losing the fight, gasping for breath before being confirmed dead.
The fight had to be abruptly stopped following the incident as Gabriel had to be rushed out of the Arena.
Further details reveal the fight, which took place at the Bukom Arena on Saturday, March 29, was a special feature on the Bel 7 Star Professional Boxing League fight night.
Gabriel’s opponent Jonathan Mbanugu (also known as “Jon Power”)— is said to have recorded 12 wins, 1 loss, and a draw, with 12 knockouts before the fight.
Gabriel had thrown two weak punches at Jonathan before the latter also threw his and got him in the face.
Following the blow, he staggered backward before collapsing and falling on the ring.
Efforts to resuscitate him failed and he was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead.
His record shows he has won three fights in his career, losing eight, six of which in Russia and two in Nigeria.
At the time of this report, it is understood Ghana Boxing Authority has yet to comment on the incident.
Meanwhile, questions have been raised on Gabriel’s physical well-being before the boxing match with some reports suggesting the athlete must have entered the fight with an unidentified medical issue. Watch Video of Incident on Twitter Here.
