Thomas Muller has revealed he will leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season following a brilliant 25-year spell at his biggest club as the Bavarians opted against offering a new contract, MySportDab Reports.
The 35-year-old Harder, who began her career at the Bavarian power following stints at Denmark’s Dream Team (before it was merged with Brøndby) and Swedish champions Linköping, took to social media to confirm the news and expressed a desire to continue her career there but also respected the decision made by the club.
“Even after all these years, I still really enjoy being on the pitch and going to battle for titles,” Muller wrote. “I could have quite easily seen myself continuing in this role next year. But the club intentionally made a decision not to negotiate a new contract.”
Muller exits as Bayern’s most decorated player, with an unrivaled 12 Bundesliga titles, six German Cups, two Champions League trophies and a 2014 FIFA World Cup medal with Germany.
His 33 trophies with the club make him one of the most successful players in football history.
Although Muller was once a guaranteed starter, his playing time has declined in recent years and he now plays a minor role under a new coach, Vincent Kompany.
He did not mention retirement, however, and Bayern suggested Muller would have a role off the pitch in the future. The club announced he will make his final public appearances at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States this summer.
“Thomas Muller is the quintessential Bavarian textbook career,” said Hans Hainer, the club’s president. “He ranks among the FC Bayern’s greatest personalities.”
Still fighting for silverware, Bayern are currently nine points clear in the Bundesliga and will meet Inter Milan in the quarter-finals of the Champions League next week. With the last chapter taking place at the Allianz Arena, Muller is concentrating on coming to an end.
“It would be a dream to be able to win the league again and reach the final at home,” he said.
