Nigerian football legend Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha has finally addressed his disappointment at never winning the CAF African Footballer of the Year award, despite his illustrious career, MySportDab Reports.
Renowned for his dazzling dribbling skills and extraordinary creativity, Okocha was one of Africa’s most admired players. While he never played for European giants like Real Madrid, Barcelona, or Manchester United, his influence on the pitch was undeniable.
He played a crucial role in Nigeria’s 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph and was instrumental in the country’s historic gold medal win at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
Despite winning several individual accolades—including the prestigious BBC African Player of the Year award three times in a row—Okocha never claimed the CAF African Footballer of the Year title. He was nominated on three occasions, with his highest finish being second place.
Reflecting on this during a recent Q&A session, the former Super Eagles captain admitted it remains one of his few career regrets.
“I’ve had an amazing career, and I don’t want to sound greedy, but I regret not winning the African Footballer of the Year award,” Okocha said. “I thought I did enough to win it, especially since I won the BBC African Player of the Year three times consecutively. It wasn’t a fluke, but I guess it just wasn’t meant to be.”
Although he never claimed Africa’s top individual honour, Okocha’s legacy continues to inspire the next generation. His impact paved the way for Nigerian stars like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, who have now won the prestigious award.
Okocha remains one of the greatest African footballers of all time, remembered for his skill, flair, and unforgettable moments on the pitch.
