Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has confirmed whether axed first-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana will be back with the first team soon, MySportDab reports.
Onana was dropped from Man United’s traveling squad for the Premier League match against Newcastle United on Sunday.
His understudy and second-choice Altay Bayindir was named in his place and notably, it didn’t turn out to be a good decision.
Bayindir conceded four goals on his debut with Manchester United succumbing to a thumping 4-1 defeat at St James Park.
Meanwhile, the decision to drop Onana from the squad followed his two errors that led to Lyon’s two goals against the Red Devils in Europa League quarter-final first leg in France.
Speaking after the 4-1 mauling by Newcastle United, Ruben Amorim confirmed there is still room for Onana to return to the squad.
He also revealed that he took the hard decision to drop him from the squad so as to force the Cameroonian to step up his game and live up to the billing.
“Sometimes, you have to push the player to play again; sometimes, you have to let him disconnect a little bit”.
“Tomorrow, André will be in training to prepare for the next one, so I felt that it was a good time for André to disconnect,” he said.
As things stand, it is yet unclear whether Onana will return on goal in United’s next match against Lyon on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Amorim’s decision to drop him from the matchday squad underscores the Portuguese’s lack of confidence in the former Inter Milan goalkeeper and further ignites conversation on his place in the club’s long term plans.
