Manchester United have now taken further steps in their search for a new centre back this summer, MySportDab reports.

The Red Devils have now drawn up a five-man shortlist.

According to ESPN, a new defender is a major priority position for coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this summer.

Solskjaer remains determined to restore United back as the best English football club.

MySportDab understands that United’s shortlist includes Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, Sevilla man Jules Kounde, Braga David Carmo, RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano, and Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings.

Raphael Varane’s future at Real Madrid remains unclear with the Frensham yet to sign a new contract extension at the club.

Jules Kounde is no doubt one of the most highly-rated young defenders across Europe.

The Sevilla impressed again with a shocking solo goal against Barcelona in the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg.

Reports suggest that the 22-year-old would cost around £55m.

Mings is an option on the shortlist for Manchester United, a well known England international.

Mings can become the solution to United’s defensive problems thanks to his natural left foot.

Braga defender David Carmo is another left-footed defender on the shortlist and United have been tracking him for some time.

Braga are not in an hurry to sell because the 21-year-old’s contract expires in 2025 so only a good bid can convince them.

RB Leipzig man Upamecano has also been linked with Manchester United over the last two transfer windows.

However, ESPN claim that Bayern Munich are ahead in the race for the wanted Leipzig star.

Despite being second in the Premier League, defence remains a big problem for Solskjaer’s team this season.

They have conceded 30 goals in 23 matches so far this season, 16 more than Manchester City who have a game in hand.

Only Leeds United with 38 goals have conceded more goals than Manchester United in the top half of the table.

Solskjaer is determined to find a long-term centre-back partner for captain Harry Maguire.

Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof, and Axel Tuanzebe have all played with Maguire this season.
