The Dutchman’s appointment was confirmed by the news last week by reports.
He took part in an interview last month with the Manchester United hierarchy.
Announcing the news, Manchester United released an official statement which read.
Speaking on the new job, Ten Hag said: ‘I’m honoured to be appointed as the manager of Manchester United.
‘I am excited by the challenge ahead.
‘I know this great club has a lot of history and the fans passion is worldclass.
‘I am determined to develop the team and achieve the the success we deserve.
‘It’s difficult for me leaving Ajax, and I can assure our fans of my complete commitment to finish the season successfully.’
Manchester United football director John Murtough said: ‘During his years at Ajax, Erik has shown that he is one of the most exciting and successful coaches in Europe.
‘He’s well known for his team’s attractive, attacking football and love for the youth.
‘In our talks with Erik before this appointment, we were impressed with his long-term plan for returning Manchester United to the top level of football
‘We wish Erik the very best here at Manchester United as he focuses on ending the season successful at Ajax.
‘We look forward to having him to Manchester United this summer.’
Ralf Rangnick has worked as interim manager since November last year but United have to make any progress.
An enormous rebuilding task awaits now Ten Hag when he arrives in the summer.
Ten Hag criticised United’s scouting and recruitment policy after the club spent £1billion since 2013 with little result.
The new manager is tasked with ending a five-year trophy drought at United after another disappointing season.
He will start making decisions on keeping players out of contract like Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Edinson Cavani.
