In a thrilling display of resilience and determination, Nigeria’s Super Falcons secured a stunning 3-2 victory against Women’s World Cup co-hosts Australia at the Lang Park Stadium in Brisbane on Thursday.

Despite facing numerous challenges leading up to the tournament, the Falcons showcased their unwavering spirit on the field.

Prior to the match, legendary Arsenal striker Ian Wright stepped forward to advocate for the rights of the Super Falcons. Addressing the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), he urged them to promptly settle any outstanding dues owed to the players.

The call for payment comes amidst a contentious situation between the team’s coach, Randy Waldrum, and the NFF regarding unpaid wages and allowances.

Coach Randy Waldrum had expressed his grievances, alleging that the NFF owed both him, his staff, and the players a significant backlog of payments.

He further criticized the federation for interfering in player selection, leading to the exclusion of goalkeeper Tochukwu Oluehi, who had boldly requested her rightful bonus.

The NFF’s subsequent ban on Oluehi was only lifted after she issued a letter of apology. In addition, Waldrum asserted that the NFF retaliated by denying his request to bring his assistant coach to Australia.

In response, the NFF’s spokesman, Ademola Olajire, counter-accused Coach Waldrum of mismanaging resources and attempting to burden the federation with excessive financial demands.

Despite the off-field turmoil, the Super Falcons showcased their unwavering commitment to the game, turning the odds in their favor with a remarkable comeback against the hosts, Australia.

The team’s stunning performance was a testament to their unity and determination, even in the face of adversity.

Coach Waldrum, choosing to focus solely on football matters, expressed his pride in the team’s spirit and determination, reaffirming their dedication to the sport.

As the FIFA Women’s World Cup continues, the spotlight remains on the Nigerian Super Falcons, both for their on-field prowess and their ongoing battle for fair treatment and remuneration.

The call for the NFF to fulfill its financial obligations to the players echoes the larger conversation surrounding gender equity and fair pay in football, underscoring the need for greater support and recognition of women’s football worldwide.
