Byron played his first collegiate football game for Marshall. Then he became Chad Pennington’s caddie.

He replaced the previous starter at quarterback in 2000. While in the Marshall University Thundering Herd, Byron Leftwich threw for 939 of 1442 yards and 89 touchdowns.

He won the MAC’s “Most Valuable Player” award in 2001 and 2002.

Byron also took home the “MAC Offensive Player of the Year” for two years.

When the ‘Jacksonville Jaguars’ needed a quarterback in 2003, they turned to Byron Leftwich.

The ‘2003 NFL Draft‘ ranked him as the seventh overall pick for that year. From 2003-2007, he remained a member of the team.

Leftwich completed 57.2% of his throws for 14 touchdowns and 16 interceptions in his rookie season with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2003.

He had 15 TDs and 10 INTs in 2004. His completion percentage was 60.5%.

He finished the fourth year (2006), completing 59% of his passes and 7 touchdowns.

On September 1, 2007, he was released from the team. The ‘Atlanta Falcons’ were Leftwich’s next stop in the NFL. On September 18, 2007, he committed to a two-year contract.

He was injured in week two of the 2007 season after debuting in week five. On February 15, 2008, he was fired.

The ‘Pittsburgh Steelers’ signed Byron to a one-year contract on August 10, 2008, following his poor 2007 campaign.

He was just Ben Roethlisberger’s backup when he started.

Five games were played, with him completing 58.3 percent of his throws and scoring two touchdowns.

He participated in Super Bowl XLIII as a substitute and was awarded a ring for his efforts.

Byron signed a two-year deal with the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers on April 12, 2009.

His starting quarterback job since August was taken away after a streak of unsatisfactory performances in September.

On April 20, 2010, he was dealt back to the ‘Pittsburgh Steelers as a result of this, which ended his tenure spent with the franchise.

After a less-than-stellar campaign, he was terminated from his post on December 31 in 2018.

It was revealed on January 8, 2019, that Byron would be joining the ‘Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ under the direction of head coach Bruce Arians.
