Nigeria’s Super Falcons showcased their prowess in a commanding 5-0 victory over Cape Verde in the first leg of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations qualifier held in Abuja, MySportDab reports.

Despite the absence of key players such as Asisat Oshoala, Ashleigh Plumptre, and Michelle Alozie, the Nigerian team, led by coach Justin Madugu, demonstrated their quality on the field.

The onslaught began early, with Mexico-based striker Uchenna Kanu breaking the deadlock in the seventh minute with a close-range finish. Tenerife star Gift Monday extended the lead midway through the first half, emphasizing Nigeria’s dominance.

Uchenna Kanu continued her stellar performance, securing a second goal just before halftime with a powerful strike that found the net off the underside of the crossbar. This solidified Nigeria’s commanding lead as they headed into the interval.

In the second half, Spain-based forward Esther Okoronkwo made a significant impact coming off the bench, contributing two goals to the team’s triumph.

She first found the net in the 66th minute, connecting with a cross from Esther Akudo Ogbonna. Okoronkwo completed her brace in the 77th minute, capitalizing on an assist from Rofiat Imuran, sealing the comprehensive victory.

With this convincing win, the Super Falcons have positioned themselves strongly for the second leg of the encounter scheduled in Praia on Tuesday, December 5th.

The upcoming match will determine which team progresses to the next stage, with Nigeria holding a substantial advantage after their dominant performance in the first leg.

The resilience and skill displayed by the Super Falcons, even in the absence of key players, underscore the depth of talent within the Nigerian women’s football squad. As they look ahead to the next stage of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations qualifiers, the team aims to maintain their momentum and secure a coveted spot in the prestigious tournament.
